This Privacy Policy is a template provided for transparency. It is not legal advice. The site operator should have it reviewed by qualified counsel before relying on it.

Who operates this site

MowerFacts (“MowerFacts,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is operated by RST LLC, 808 Chestnut Street 1096, Chattanooga, TN 37402, and runs the website at mowerfacts.com, an independent, free, informational reference database of lawn mower specifications and side-by-side comparisons. We are not a retailer and we do not sell products. Questions about privacy can be sent to privacy@mowerfacts.com.

Information we collect

MowerFacts has no user accounts and does not ask you to register, log in, or pay. We collect information in five ways:

• Server access logs. Like virtually all web servers, our hosting platform records each request: your IP address, browser user-agent string, the page requested, the referring URL, and a timestamp. We use these only to operate, secure, and debug the service.
• Usage analytics through Microsoft Clarity, described below.
• Our own page-view and outbound-click counts, described below.
• Corrections you choose to send through the “Suggest a correction” form, described below.
• A property address, only if you use the acreage calculator — the one thing here that is not anonymous. See the acreage calculator below.
• Price-alert signups — your email address and the models you choose to follow, described below.

Analytics: Microsoft Clarity

We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use the site — which pages are read, where people click and scroll, and where a page is confusing — so we can improve it. We do not use Clarity for advertising.

Session behavior. Clarity records how you interact with pages: clicks, taps, mouse movement, scrolling, the pages you visit and how long you stay, plus device, browser, operating system, and approximate location derived from your IP address. From this it produces aggregate reports, heatmaps, and session replays (a reconstruction of your visit). Clarity masks text you type into form fields, numbers, and email addresses by default, and our corrections form is masked as well, so that content is not sent to Clarity.

Cookies. Clarity stores a random pseudonymous ID in cookies so it can connect page views into a session and recognize return visits:

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are handled in Clarity’s no-consent mode unless consent is given: no Clarity cookies are set and each page view gets a separate ID. Clarity data is processed by Microsoft as described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement and Clarity’s cookie documentation.

How to opt out of Clarity

Opting out does not change how the site works. Use any of these:

1. Use the switch below. It stops Clarity loading on MowerFacts in this browser, deletes Clarity’s cookies, and ends the current recording. It is saved in your browser’s local storage, so it applies until you turn it off or clear your site data, and you need to set it in each browser you use.
2. Turn on Global Privacy Control (GPC). If your browser or extension sends the GPC signal, MowerFacts does not load Clarity at all.
3. Block or delete cookies. Block cookies for mowerfacts.com and clarity.ms in your browser settings, or block third-party cookies. When cookies are disabled, Clarity does not set them.
4. Use a content or tracker blocker. Most block the Clarity script (clarity.ms) automatically.

Our own page-view and outbound-click counts

Separately from Clarity, MowerFacts keeps its own record of which pages are viewed and which links to other sites (for example a manufacturer’s product page) are clicked, so we can tell whether the site is useful. It runs on our own server and is not sent to or shared with anyone else. For each page view or outbound click we store the page, the kind of site you arrived from (for example “a search engine”) and its hostname, the address of the outside link that was clicked without any query string, whether the price-alert dialog was opened or submitted, whether a mower was added to the compare tray, whether a few of the page’s own links (such as the manufacturer link or the compare button) were ever on screen so we know how many people saw them, which edition of the site the page belongs to (United States or Australia), and the time.

Approximate location. We also store a country and a coarse area, such as “US” and “US-Central”. These come from the time zone your browser already reports (for example America/Chicago) — not from your IP address, and we do not use any geolocation service. We keep only the country and the area, not the time zone itself, so the most precise thing recorded is a region shared by tens of millions of people. Outside the US and Canada the area is just the continent.

Whether you have been here before. We store a label such as “new” or “returning in the last 7 days”, plus a rough count band such as “2–3 visits”. Your browser works this out for itself from a small counter it keeps in its own local storage, and sends us only the label. No identifier is created, sent or stored, which means we can see what share of visitors come back but we still cannot connect any two of your visits to each other, or tell that two visits were yours. Clearing your site data resets the counter, and we count you as new again.

These records set no cookie, and we do not store your IP address or your browser’s user-agent string with them. To tell one visit from another we compute a short code from your IP address, your user-agent and a random value that is replaced every day and then deleted, so the code cannot be turned back into an address or linked from one day to the next. Nothing is recorded if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, or if you have used the opt-out switch above.

Price alerts

If you ask to be told when a model’s price changes, we store your email address, the models you chose to follow, and the date, time and IP address at which you ticked the consent box — that last part is our record that you agreed.

We use it for one thing: emailing you when the list price of a model you follow actually changes. There is no newsletter, no digest and no promotional mail, and we don’t email you to say nothing has changed. If no price you follow moves, you hear nothing.

Every alert carries a one-click link to stop alerts for that model and a second to stop all MowerFacts email. Unsubscribing takes effect immediately; we keep the record that you had consented and then withdrew it, rather than deleting it, so we can show why we emailed you. You can also write to privacy@mowerfacts.com and we will remove you.

Alert emails are delivered by Resend, our email provider, which processes your address to send them. We do not sell, rent or share subscriber addresses, and we don’t use them for anything but these alerts.

Corrections form

Every page has a “Suggest a correction” form. When you send it, we receive your message, the page you were on (and the model name on model pages), your browser’s user-agent string, and your email address only if you enter one. The form is emailed to the site operator through Resend, our email delivery provider, and a copy is kept in our database so that a correction is not lost if the email fails. We use it only to check and fix the data, and to reply if you left an email. Your IP address is briefly held in memory to limit spam and is not included in the email. Please don’t include sensitive personal information in your message.

The acreage calculator, and your property address

This is the one place on MowerFacts where we keep information that identifies something about you — a property address. It is not anonymous, and we are not going to describe it as if it were.

If you use the acreage calculator, you type an address and mark the area you mow. Here is exactly what happens to that.

Resolving the address. The address you submit is sent to a geocoding service to turn it into a map location. Today that service is Nominatim, run by the OpenStreetMap Foundation, and your address is processed under their privacy policy. We send only the address text — no name, no email, nothing about your visit. We do not write the address into our server logs.

Suggestions while you type. The address box suggests places as you type. Those suggestions come from Photon, a search service run by Komoot on OpenStreetMap data, and it is a different provider from the one above because Nominatim’s rules do not permit search-as-you-type. This means a partly typed address is sent — not only the finished one — starting at three characters, and only after you pause typing. It goes through our server, so your browser never contacts Photon and your IP address is not passed on, and we do not log what you typed. Alongside the text we use your browser’s time zone to work out which country you are in — nothing finer, and never an IP-address lookup — because postcodes repeat across countries and “37377” is a real postcode in Tennessee, Lithuania and Sweden. It is used to put the search in the right country and is not stored with the suggestion. If you would rather nothing was sent until you are finished, type the address and press Find property without using a suggestion: the suggestion request does not fire until you have paused, so a steadily typed address never triggers one.

The map itself. The aerial images are served by Esri, from its World Imagery basemap; where satellite imagery from Mapbox is configured it is used instead, and OpenStreetMap serves the street map if the site is set to use one. The page tells you which you are looking at. Whichever it is, that provider can see that a browser requested the tiles covering the area you are looking at. That is unavoidable for any map and is the reason the page does not load a map until you ask it to.

What we keep. When a calculation succeeds we store a record of the property:

• the canonical address the geocoder returned, and its latitude and longitude — encrypted, with the key held outside the database;
• the outline you drew, also encrypted;
• the calculated acreage and a coarse size band;
• a coarse location, rounded to about 11 km, so we can see which regions use the tool;
• when it was first and last calculated, and how many times;
• your answer to “what are you mowing?”, if you chose to answer it.

Why we keep it. To provide the calculator, to avoid asking the geocoder the same question twice, and to learn one thing we genuinely do not know: whether people calculate the same property repeatedly, or many different properties. That difference decides whether this is a homeowner tool or something a landscaping business would use, and it is the reason the “what are you mowing?” question exists.

What the property record does not contain. No name, no email address, no IP address, and no link to your browsing. A record can say “this property was calculated three times”; it cannot say who did it, or tie those calculations to anything else you did on the site. That is deliberate: the property data and the visit analytics are separate stores, and nothing joins them.

What our analytics gets. Only that a calculation happened, which coarse band the acreage fell in (for example “1–2”), and your audience answer if you gave one. No address, no coordinates, no outline, no exact acreage ever reaches the analytics described above.

How long. The encrypted address, coordinates and outline are deleted after a set retention period (currently 400 days from the last calculation, configurable). The anonymous statistics — acreage band, coarse region, counts — are kept after that, because they carry no address.

If you would rather not. Don't use the calculator; nothing else on the site asks for an address. If you have used it and want the record removed, write to privacy@mowerfacts.com with the address and we will delete it. The privacy opt-out, Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track all still apply to the behavioural analytics on this page; they do not affect the property record, because that record is the service you asked for rather than measurement of you.

Cookies we set

MowerFacts sets no cookies of its own and no advertising cookies. The only cookies on the site are Clarity’s, listed above. The site does use your browser’s local storage for three things: your Clarity opt-out choice, the models you add to the compare tray, and a small counter of how many times you have visited. None of the three leaves your browser — of the visit counter, only a bucket such as “returning” is reported, as described above, and it holds no identifier.

The acreage calculator also keeps the outline you drew in your browser’s session storage, which is per-tab and is discarded when you close the tab. That is what lets you go from a mower to the calculator to a comparison and back without tracing the same lawn twice. It stays in your browser: the outline is never put in a web address, never sent to our analytics, and the encrypted copy described above is written only when a calculation succeeds. “Start over” and “Calculate another property” both clear it immediately.

Third parties

We use these providers to run the site:

• Railway (railway.app) hosts the site and keeps server logs.
• Microsoft Clarity provides usage analytics, as described above.
• Resend (resend.com) delivers corrections-form emails and price alerts.
• OpenStreetMap (osm.org) resolves addresses and can serve map images for the acreage calculator, as described above. It is used only on that page.
• Komoot (photon.komoot.io) suggests addresses as you type in the acreage calculator. It is used only on that page.
• Esri (arcgisonline.com) serves the aerial map images for the acreage calculator. It is used only on that page.
• Mapbox (mapbox.com) can serve those aerial images instead, where it is configured. It is used only on that page.

We do not sell, rent, or share data with advertisers or data brokers. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the security and integrity of the service.

Data retention

Price-alert subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe, and the consent record is kept after that as evidence of why we emailed you. Server access logs are kept only as long as needed for operational, security, and debugging purposes, then rotated or deleted. Our own page-view and outbound-click counts are kept while we study how the site is used and are then deleted or reduced to totals. Clarity keeps analytics data under Microsoft’s retention policy for Clarity projects. Correction emails are kept in the operator’s inbox until they are no longer needed. Because we maintain no user accounts, we hold no profile data.

Children’s privacy

MowerFacts is a general-audience informational site and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights (CCPA / GDPR summary)

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) or the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of personal data, and to object to processing. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we honor Global Privacy Control signals as described above. Because MowerFacts has no user accounts, the data we hold that is tied to you is limited to server logs, pseudonymous Clarity data, and any correction you sent. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
